Every little thing you do makes me smile

The way the breeze ruffled your leaves, it is like you are dancing just for me

When the world seems out of control, you are my refuge

You are not too big and not too small, as if you were made just for me

From the way you smell to your personal style, you have turned my dreams into a reality

Neighborhood

West Berkeley, also known as the Waterfront, has such diverse offerings so much to offer that it's hard to know where to begin. This area, in between 6th Street, Sacramento and San Pablo Avenue, is chock full of wonderful restaurants, stores, parks, and more.

Local businesses like Metro Lighting, Omega Salvage, Mi Tierra Market, and Bar-B-Que give the neighborhood a one-of-a-kind feel, while Caffe Trieste Berkeley keeps things hot with coffee, panini, pastries, and live music. Come out on any fourth Sunday to catch Papa Gianni, the owner of Cafe Trieste, singing classical Italian Ariettas.

In West Berkeley's treasure chest of other yummy restaurants are Everett & Jones BBQ and Bangkok Thai Cuisine, to name a few. Acme Bar offers free tamales and $3 beers every Sunday. For family eats, Lanesplitter has great pizzas and salads. And if you are into a competitive game night, the Albatross Pub with its variety of board games, pool tables and dart boards, not to mention a fine selection of tap beer and 25-cent popcorn, should not be missed.

Berkeley may be known around the world for its University, but the schools for the younger set are equally amazing. The Walden School, Black Pine Circle, Nia House Learning Center, The Berkeley School, Ecole Bilingue de Berkeley (for those who are or want to be Franco-phones), and Rosa Parks Science and Environmental Science public school (known for being one of the first Berkeley public schools to run it energy from its solar panels) all live up to the area's high academic standards.

For lovers of trees and water, Aquatic Park is a gem. Popular with dogs and people alike, this park has an ultimate Frisbee course, Dreamland Park playground, and an overpass that lets you walk over to the Berkeley Marina, where locals enjoy windsurfing, kayaking, fishing and pausing for a moment to take in the beautiful scenery along the water's edge.

Down Fourth Street you will find a skate park for kids and a vast amount of retail stores and restaurants including Peet's Coffee, Spenger's Fresh Fish Grotto, The Gardener, TacubayaAveda, Mac, Sven handbag factory, Brennan's, Brushstrokes, The East Bay Vivarium, and more. The renowned Zaentz Media Center, as well as other world famous artists and crafts persons, can be found working in small studios sprinkled throughout the district.

The real estate within West Berkeley's neighborhoods is dotted with modest single-family homes and even a few Victorian farmhouses, which were the area's original dwellings.

Whether you want to tackle a fixer-upper, or purchase a smaller home that's already been expertly remodeled, West Berkeley is a great place to start.

Seller Love

Welcome to Cowper Street!

The first time we saw this house we were immediately enamoured with its beauty and charm and were determined to make it our home. Eight years later and we love it that much more for all the wonderful memories we’ve made while living here.

We’ll never forget the day we moved in and one of our neighbors greeted us with a pot of soup and a bottle of wine. That friendship, along with several of our other neighbors, grew over the years as we shared pet care, tools, community meetings, dinner parties, block parties and even a baby shower for our twin boys. We will dearly miss being a part of this sweet, tight-knit community.

Our friends still talk about the themed movie nights we use to throw in our backyard on summer nights, with some snuggled up on the deck with pillows and blankets, while others socialized around the tiki bar. We often walked around the corner to pick up bananas from Mi Tierra, or a baguette and some cheese from Country Cheese. Other favorite conveniences in the neighborhood included the post office, the library, Temari Sushi and our favorite Indian/Pakistani restaurant, Kabana. On our last night in the house, we ordered from Kabana and sat on the living room floor and ate off paper plates.

Many of our most cherished memories in this house are of our boys: bringing them home from the hospital with every flower in the front yard blooming, watching them bounce in their jumpers, crawling in the grass, splashing in the bathtub, riding their trikes in circles around the house, digging in the dirt and helping us do yardwork and chasing each other around the picnic table. Both our boys still talk about how they miss our little house.

Moving on from this home is bittersweet and if we could have picked it up and brought it with us to Washington, we would have. We hope that whomever lives here next enjoys it as much as we did.

Kelly and Justin
